Despite Apple insisting that this card does not work with the 2008 Mac Pro (MacPro 3,1) I decided to take a chance and order the card because the machine meets all of the required hardware specifications. I looked at the actual technical requirements like slot type and power availability based on the AMD/ATI information, not just what Apple officially publishes. I put the card into the machine and it works great. I ran a simple OpenCL ray tracing application and was very pleased by the performance. One thing that is not explicitly made clear without research is that the card requires two 6-pin power connections. As such, it is not possible to install more than one of these cards in your computer, at least on the model I have, however the instructions indicate that the situation may be the same for the 2009 and 2010 models that this card is advertised for.

Also, the card I received looks like the card that is under the smaller one as shown in the picture. It is around 12...Read more

Even though not part of required specs, research indicated.that this card would work with my macpro. Since I had to upgrade to an open GL card to run Final Cut Pro X, this card made most sense. Installation was easy and took less then 15 minutes thanks to good Youtube instructions. Turn on power and both my screens worked even though I ultimately ended up running my primary screen from the new card and my secondary screen from the original card. A very significant improvement in speed on all video content applications.

Apple doesn't say this graphics card is supported for anything past 2009. But the posts and blogs all said it would work in a 2006 Dual Core Mac Pro version 1,1, so I gambled.
It arrived today and it's installed. A new monitor is on the way....but even my 10 year old Apple Cinema screen looks immensely better. Aperture and Final Cut Pro both show improvements.

While tens of thousands of Mac users await a new Mac Pro in 2012, along with me, at least I've updated my old system to the latest specs and I'm happy.
When the new Pro comes out, I'll keep this system for legacy editing projects and get a few more years out of it.
