This review is from: Asus ATI Radeon HD4870 1 GB DDR5 2DVI PCI-Express Video Card EAH4870/2DI/1GD5 (Personal Computers) I was really excited about this card when I first ordered it. Although it's an older card, it was to replace my burnt out Nvidia 8800GTX and figured it'd work great for the few games I still play (Starcraft 2, Heroes of Newerth and a couple other random games) based on various benchmarks I had read on the internet. It was great for the first couple hours when I was simply using it for streaming video and browsing the web, but it kept crashing once I started to game with it. My assumption is that the cooling system on it isn't that great as even the monitors kept telling me that it was frequently going over the 70 degrees Celsius mark (on stock settings). I have an Alienware Area-51 with great airflow so it couldn't be my case cooling system and I've got a 700W PSU so it couldn't be a power issue. I've heard great things about the HD4870 GPU so I'm gonna chalk this up to a faulty build. I didn't give it a 1 or 2 star overall rating because if you like...Read more 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful: By redefind (St. Paul, MN) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Asus ATI Radeon HD4870 1 GB DDR5 2DVI PCI-Express Video Card EAH4870/2DI/1GD5 (Personal Computers) Sure it's not dual-slot or anything, but it works great! It can even be over-clocked to 850mhz (maybe higher)! It works great and I have no issues with it. Sometimes when I maximize Windows Media Center, I see the desktop in a line of pixels on the right hand side, but that only happens every once in a while, and when I unmaximize it & then remaximize it that small view of the desktop goes away (and that's the only program that happens with). Otherwise it plays C&C 3 smooth & fast as ever with every single setting set to it's highest, so I have no complaints!
One issue to note: This could be my monitor (which is pretty decent) or Windows clear-type, but black letters sometimes look colored. Not sure what that is. I think it could be my monitor because when I change the display scheme the coloration of the letters changes, and it also changes when I change the clear type settings. Nevertheless this thing works great. By Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) the HD4890,4870 and 4850s are still valuable video cards that work well with modern games or old games. the only con is that the HD-4870 and 4890s draw 50+Watts more than the 5770s. the HD 4870 & 90 also needs additional power plug ins. i installed a asus hd4870 to replace an ailing HIS x1900 and was like WOW! the 4670 is light years ahead-- |
