Watch High-definition Digital TV on Your Computer
The WinTV-HVR-1250 lets you watch ATSC digital TV as well as QAM digital TV and analog cable TV directly on your computer. ATSC digital TV, which typically requires an antenna for reception, is the over-the-air HDTV standard for North America. ATSC broadcasts range in resolution from standard definition up to the high definition 1080i format. (To check the ATSC digital transmissions in your area, input your zip code at titantv.com.)

The WinTV-HVR-1250 also lets you watch and record QAM channels, which are unencrypted digital channels broadcast by your local cable operator. If you don't have access to digital television channels yet, you can also watch regular analog cable television. And with the included remote control, you can control your cable TV or satellite set top box.

In addition to high-definition video, the card also features a dbx-TV stereo decoder for great TV sound. The card has S-Video and stereo audio inputs that allow for connecting VCRs or cable/satellite set top boxes.

Your Own Personal Digital Video Recorder!
With the included software, you can easily record TV shows to your hard disk using MPEG-2. Several recording options are available depending on your playback needs; higher quality video requires more disk space. Generally, 5 gigabytes of disk space is used per hour of ATSC digital TV recordings, and 1.5 gigabytes of disk space is used per hour of Analog recording using Hauppauge's SoftPVR for Windows XP and Media Center.

With the WinTV-Scheduler software, you can easily schedule the recordings of your favorite television shows daily, weekly, or just once. You can then play back the recordings at your leisure, burn them onto CD or DVD for playback on another computer or your television, or with video editing software (not included), you can even edit the shows. This is great for saving favorite movie clips, clips of your home team's dramatic last-second win, or your favorite player's grand slam.

The Hauppauge 1196 WinTV-HVR-1250 plugs into a PCI express X1 or X16 slot, and is compatible with Windows Vista, XP with Service Pack 2, and Windows XP Media Center Edition. With XP-MCE and Vista, you can add the WinTV-HVR-1250 as either the primary or secondary TV tuner. The Microsoft Media Center application supports up to two TV tuners so if you have a second tuner in addition to the WinTV-HVR-1250, you can watch one channel while recording another.

What's in the Box
WinTV-HVR-1250 PCI Express bus TV tuner, remote control with batteries, remote control receiver cable, WinTV software CD-ROM, quick installation guide, and half-height bracket for use in low-profile chassis.

Summary: Excellent product at a very reasonable price 2010-03-06
Comment: Plugged it into the PC and attached the coaxial cable (I don't have a cable box). Ignored Windows "Found New Device" per instructions. Downloaded the driver from the Hauppauge site and ran it. Used the included CD to install the WinTV application (NOT the driver). Ran the setup and the card scanned for available channels.
The HD quality is excellent. My PC is connected to the TV set (Sony LCD). I tuned the same program on the PC Card and the TV set. Switched between the inputs to the TV (PC and TV) and could hardly notice a difference.
The recording playback quality is excellent, could not notice any difference between the original and the playback unlike some DVR products I saw.
Used up about 2 GB of memory when playing HD channel. The CPU usage was acceptable at about 20% (I have a quad at 2.66). Haven't used the remote nor the scheduling part of the software yet.
My initial reaction is very favorable. Recommended.

Summary: Easy setup with MythTV / Ubuntu 9.10 2010-02-18
Comment: I bought the HVR-1250 to replace an ailing PCHDTV-5500. It works perfectly! (And it's half the price!) The software didn't seem to notice the switch, even though the new card uses a PCIE-1 slot rather than the old PCI 2.2 slot. It only took a few minutes to get it up and running.

The messages during the channel scan were a little weird. Even the local frequencies timed out. I got messages like "XX timed out, 5 probable channels". I'm not sure if that's due to the card or just the new version of MythTV I'm using. The channels all worked after the scan.

I haven't tried to do anything with the remote yet. Nor have I tried NTSC or the S-video input. I'm planning on getting a second card so I can record 2 channels at once.

Summary: Great! 2010-02-17
Comment: So I installed this card within minutes of it arriving at my doorstep. It works great, although I need to purchase the remote and IR blaster to get it to work with Windows MC, bummer, but the product is great none the less!

Summary: tv tuner card 2010-02-17
Comment: I am very disappointed with this product. The set up is not easy to understand. The picture quality is very poor. My previous card of the same brand had excellant picture quality, but because my new I7 pc had all pci express slots, I couldn't tranfer the pci card to it. The nice looking remote won't active at all. But I am stuck with it as I watch a lot of tv on my pc.

Summary: Okay for the price 2010-02-12
Comment: This could have a little higher resolution but captures fine with media center for playback on an older TV without any resolution loss. Originally I was having problems with the video flickering. I finally figured out that my wireless network card was the causing interference with the TV tuner. Once I removed the wireless card it worked flawlessly

Pros: Good price, easy installation

Cons: Remote doesn't work with Windows Media Center, accepts interference

I'd probably buy a higher end Hauppauge card next time with dual tuners but it is fine if you just want to record one show at a time or watch live TV on your PC
