4.0 out of 5 stars Succumbed to Heat after 3 months of Dutiful Performance, August 8, 2010

Death in the Line of Duty

-------------------------------------

To start, even though this card is dead and Amazon won't accept a return, I in no way

blame Amazon for this fiasco, as the card was manufactured by XFX, not Amazon. I do however

have some choice words for XFX as the only replies I have received from them look like they were

written by a fifteen year old with no tech knowledge.

The Card

------------------------

running the 5970 in an Antec 900

with an overclocked i7 920 (3.2 GHz)

and a ocz 700w power supply.

When this card performed, it did so admirably, pumping out massive performance that dominated

every game I threw at it including the currently (in my mind) best looking game Metro 2033, and

yes, before you ask, it can play Crysis!

+Crysis- 1920 X 1080 with everything maxed = 55 fps average.

+Metro 2033-...Read more

After reading a few bad reviews about the XFX 5970 BE I was a little afraid about buying it. But I found it with a better price here and bought it. Believe me, after updating the BIOS this card is PERFECT. No issue at all! Its also very easy to overclock it with the XFX tool. I'm right now OCing it @ 815|1175 WITHOUT TWEAKING THE VOLTAGE!!! Sweeet. BUY IT NOW! If you are a demanding gamer.

Playing EVERYTHING (including Crisis Warhead, DoW2, AC2, BioShock2, MW2 etc) @ 1080p+4AA+16AF >= 50fps. One thing you should know... the cooler (over 50%) is WAY to noise. Get ready for some headphone with noise canceling!

Most people purchasing this card are looking to have what is currently the fastest single slot card on the market. This is that card.

I purchased the XFX version because of the lifetime warranty. I had no problems with installation and the few questions I had for XFX technical support were answered quickly.

I do notice on startup that on the leftmost display of my two monitor setup, there is some faint flickering during the BIOS splash screen but it goes away almost immediately and I have noticed no issues when in the operating system. Although I have it set to factory settings, I have noticed that in graphic-intensive environments, when the GPU fan kicks on, it is loud. It's not annoying or distracting but it is there. On the upside, it doesn't happen often (say 10% of the time when gaming).

It is an extremely long card (about as big as a one pound box of chocolates) but my Level 10 case did accommodate it without issue.
